I have made the next steps for the wooden rod tube… glued up, sanded and sealed… next is to cap the end with a thin hardwood ply, sand and seal them to form a complete sealed tube. Once dry and ready I will then cut about an inch & half down from one end to fit a wee brass hinge and probably a small magnet or maybe some sort of leather closer???

Plan is to try and have this done this week ready for traveling to Southland for opening, something to protect my Bamboo rod in transit to a special wee stream I have in mind!

I have made a start on a hexagonal wooden rod tube for the bamboo rod, it will be nice to have something a little different to keep the rod safe. I collected some hardwood slats back while I still worked at ITM, they had small wood worm marks that I thought would create a cool old recycled look to the tube. Richard (Pedigree Drums) my brother in-law has a pretty sweet workshop so I cheated and dropped the timber to him to machine, that way I knew the angles would be correct and accurate rather than my builders technique of a rough old rip saw and plenty of sanding.

I plan to varnish the finished tube with the same Spar varnish I coated the boo blank with, I have coated the inside of the slats prior to gluing it up to seal and protect the inside of the rod tube. I got a little more varnish on the edges than intend so I will have a bit of clean up before I glue it up. Pretty happy with the colour and grain that has come out with the varnish…

Once dried, a quick sand and scrap the edges, it will be time to glue up and sand down for the outside to be varnished… keep tuned!
